When applying for citizenship in the United States, there are several ways to prepare for the naturalization interview.
When applying for citizenship in the United States, there are several ways to prepare for the naturalization interview.
Gather Documents to Bring to the Interview
Ahead of a citizenship interview, an interview notice will arrive in the mail, including the date, time, and place of the interview. Along with this notice card, the applicant needs to bring the following:
- Their permanent resident card and a second form of state-issued photo ID
- All valid and expired passports and travel documents that indicate absences from the United States since being granted permanent residency
- Any other documents that are included in the Document Checklist, Form M-477, on the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website.
Review the N-400 Application
A majority of the naturalization interview will involve a detailed review of the Form N-400, Application for Naturalization. The USCIS officer who is conducting the interview will ask various questions about the application and any supporting documentation. While confirming the applicant's information, the interviewer will also test their ability to understand and speak English. The applicant should thoroughly review their N-400 Application ahead of the interview to prepare.
Note Changes Since Filing the N-400 Application
It is essential to report any changes that must be made to the N-400 Application and answer any questions about these changes. Regular and straightforward changes in life circumstances such as a new job or taking a vacation must be updated on the N-400 form.
